Careers in top gear as couple swap tractors for tourism

Miles and Virginia - Moss Wood Caravan Park
Life is now a walk in the park for Miles and Virginia Walker (above) who have left farming for pastures new

Lancashire’s multi-award winning caravan park, Moss Wood has welcomed a couple who both decided to flip their careers and take on a fresh outdoor challenge.

Miles and Virginia Walker are the newly appointed wardens at the Lancaster park after quitting the world of farming for pastures new.Originally from the East Riding of Yorkshire, the duo will now be in day-to-day charge of the business which last year triumphed in the Lancashire Tourism Awards.

Descended from a long-standing farming family, Miles came to know Virginia in her role as the landlady of the village pub – and the couple soon became an “item”.

Their ambition was always to work together – and now the family-run park, based in Lancaster, has given them the opportunity to realise their dream.

But although it’s holidays instead of hectares which will occupy their days from now on, the natural world will still have a big part to play in the pair’s work schedule.

Set deep in rural Lancashire, Moss Wood has won a raft of environmental awards for sustaining wildlife

Moss Wood has won a series of environmental awards for its conservation work, and Miles and Virginia will have a major part to play in  driving forward its various schemes.

They include a 1.5km nature discovery trail, a 3000 square-foot wild flower wilderness attracting honey bees and butterflies, and a wildlife lake in the park’s grounds.

In the most recent Lancashire Tourism Awards, Moss Wood beat contenders from across the North West to take first place in the “ethical, responsible and sustainable” category of the competition.

Moss Wood provides holiday homes to buy as well as pitches for touring caravans and motorhomes. There is more information about the park at www.mosswood.co.uk
