Explore Castles and cathedrals

From the dales to coast, you’ll find exceptional castles throughout County Durham. Raby Castle is great for children who will love Plotters Forest and spotting wildlife in the deer park. Above the banks of the River Tees is Barnard Castle. As well as stunning views, you’ll be able to take in the historic architecture and carvings, as well as enjoying a picnic on the expansive grounds.

Perfect for a day out whilst on holiday is the impressive Durham Castle, built over 1000 years ago has been transformed into a lavish palace and is now a World Heritage Site and part of the university campus. Tour the black staircase, great hall, and underground chapel. Close by is the spiritual space of Durham Cathedral. Climb the tower, explore the exhibitions, and immerse yourself in the culture and faith of the area.

Going wild in County Durham

County Durham has one of the best coastlines in the country, stretching from Hartlepool to Sunderland. It offers so much to look at – yellow magnesian limestone cliffs, shallow bays, and the Easington Colliery Local Nature Reserve.

You’ll also see skylarks and lapwings as well as the stunning flora of the area. Depending on the time of year you’ll see orchids, wild garlic, snowdrops, or bluebells.

With waterfalls, ancient woodlands and rolling dales, there’s so much natural beauty to see. And once you have holidayed here, you’ll understand why landscape artist JMW Turner toured the area to get inspiration for some of his commissioned pieces.

Museums and things to do

Be sure to visit Beamish Living Museum of the North during your County Durham holiday. Offering a slice of life in Northeast England during the 1820s, 1900s and 1940s. With small town sets ups through time, you’ll be able to see pit ponies, life before the First World War and Rowley Station which still looks like it did during Edwardian times.
