Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway
Barnsoul is one of Galloways most scenic working farms, nestling against the base of rolling hills that stretch for forty or more miles into our southern highlands. At the foot of the Cairn Valley our farm sits in a bowl surrounded by a patchwork of wooded parkland, small ponds and traditional heathland. All this is a natural environment for our resident fox, deer and red squirrel families and for our visiting badgers and otters. We have also recorded over one hundred different bird species over the years.
Barnsoul is a very historic place and the remains of the Doons Hill Fort can still be easily recognised. The last remains of "Cairneys Close" a mediaeval farm settlement complete with original fresh water supply and with a natural garden of rare orchids is also close by...
Standing on the Doons on a magical summer evening it is not too difficult to envisage the scene here five hundred or even two thousand years ago.
If you are bored by history, birds and bees we are in a superb area for cycling and walking! Golf, fishing and riding are all within easy reach.
Last but not least we have now on site our new "Sheiling" bothies similar in design to traditional Scandinavian mountain huts... Those are low cost family basic accommodation, heated and with full access to the site kitchen and showers.
Mix of gravel, grassy hard standing touring pitches, tent pitches, statics caravans, little lodges and glamping pods and timber lodges.
Off A75 Shawhead, at T junction turn right, take first left signed Dunscore, follow road 1.5 miles. Park on left.
