Welsh history to discover

There is certainly a touch of history in the air. Nestled amongst the rolling Welsh landscape are some atmospheric castles. To get to Denbigh Castle you’ll need to follow in the footsteps of horses and soldiers as you cross the drawbridge. This huge former royal residence is an impressive fortress – but see if you can spot the secure secret doorway.

Conwy Castle has played a part in several wars since its construction in 1283. Withstanding the English Civil War and many sieges, the castle has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Very well-preserved, the castle has some of the most intact medieval royal apartments in Wales.

If you want to spend time on your holiday visiting stunning gardens and an expansive estate, 17th century country house Erddig Hall is just the place. After taking in the historic house and outbuildings, be sure to take a wander through 1,200 acres of meadows, rivers, ponds, ancient woodland, and the restored walled garden with its Dutch influences.

Explore the Vale of Clwyd

Stretching from the Irish Sea, the Vale of Clwyd is a stunning area to spend time on your holiday. With varied landscape throughout, you’ll be able to see low hills, river tributaries and the mystical Clocaenog Forest. There are rambling groups you can join for the day, or simply explore the green spaces and paths at your own pace.

The historic town of Ruthin is the perfect mix of past and present. Enjoy glimpsing the 600-year-old buildings that are now homes to banks and shops and refuel at the wonderful eateries and cafés where you can sample some local flavour.

Venture out of Ruthin town by foot or bike to experience the gorgeous scenery. There’s plenty of forests and valleys to capture your imagination or take your four-legged friend for a walk. You can sign up to horse riding, motor biking, fishing or why not hone your camping skills by booking a family day out doing bushcraft activities.

Fun family activities in Denbighshire

Colwyn Bay is brimming with family fun. It’s come a long way since Victorian times. The three-mile promenade is great for a stroll to neighbouring Rhos-on-Sea and if you need to stop for a bite, be sure to visit the Porth Eirias development where you’ll find a bistro run by Michelin award-winner Bryn Williams.
Overlooking the bay you’ll find the Welsh Mountain Zoo. Kids will love the discovering the snow leopards, gibbons and red pandas. Sign up to be a zookeeper for the day and be sure to visit the 37 acres of gardens filled with botanical wonders.
